As of 4th March 2016
– 5900 suspected cases
– 640 confirmed for microcephaly
– Only 80 had zika virus Note: Zika (or dengue) found in 80 out of 640 (12.5%) cases of confirmed microcephaly. 87.5% of microcephaly cases tested negative for zika (or dengue) virus. Dengue virus may be creating false positives for zika. Zika and dengue are very similar.
Shares of startup gene editing biotech Editas, which had the first U.S. IPO of 2016, plunged nearly 26% in Tuesday trading after enjoying more than a month as the runaway most successful firm to go public this year
As The Street notes, one major reason for Editas’ success over its 2016 IPO peers is a heavy-hitting roster of investors which includes Bill Gates, Google Ventures, and Fidelity Investments, and others
The more likely possibility is the important impending court proceedings over a CRISPR patent dispute between the University of California and the Broad Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology which could shake things up in the market.

It is best to start viewing these Forbes richlists with some suspicion! Based on land holdings, Queen Elizabeth II has the largest land holdings which is estimated to be worth trillions! Trillions NOT billions! http://www.whoownstheworld.com/
“The ability to create and modify ‘organic’ materials on increasingly larger scales has occurred with a number of breakthroughs in genetic engineering including automated DNA sequencing, DNA synthesis, the advent of computational bioinformatics, and the creation of genetically modified organisms. Today, Intrexon’s expertise in designing DNA and constructing complex gene programs utilizing a modular, scalable approach with an embedded capacity to predict the viability of a biological solution, places it at the leading-edge of this growing synthetic biology discipline.”
“Zika virus forces us to confront a potential new disease-emergence phenomenon: pandemic expansion of multiple, heretofore relatively unimportant arboviruses previously restricted to remote ecologic niches,” they write. “To respond, we urgently need research on these viruses and the ecologic, entomologic, and host determinants of viral maintenance and emergence. Also needed are better public health strategies to control arboviral spread.”
Question: Why is there now a pandemic of an “emerging” Zika mosquito borne virus, now that we have increased research into just that? Mosquitoes as vectors for disease. According to wikipedia, Zika has been very rare until 2007 and the recent cases.
It’s the first genetic editing company to file an IPO.
Editas Medicine—a startup backed by Bill Gates and Google Ventures, among others— has filed to become the first gene-editing medical technology company to go public
The Crispr technique, which allows scientists to precisely and easily edit genes that will be passed down to future generations, has been heralded in the scientific community as a revolutionary step into the future of medicine. Some scientists, in a study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, are already proposing to use the technology to wipe out certain species of mosquitos that are the prime carriers of malaria. In December, policy-makers and scientists gathered in Washington, D.C. for a conference to discuss the wide-ranging implications of the technique, where many advised caution in the use of such a powerful tool.
