A train of thought worth exploring regarding Boko Haram and other Islamic militants in Northern Africa,


This is a story that many in Africa will already know: that Saudi Arabia spread Wahabism through funding mosques and supporting the most conservative forms of Islam. It is to be found from Somalia to Nigeria and down to South Africa.

Although IS is certainly an Islamic movement, it is neither typical nor mired in the distant past, because its roots are in Wahhabism, a form of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia that developed only in the 18th century.
