The researchers found that as expected, the animals that drank the largest amounts of alcohol showed greatly diminished vaccine responses compared to the control group.
But animals that drank moderate amounts of ethanol displayed enhanced vaccine responses.
Ilhem Messaoudi, an associate professor of biomedical sciences at UC Riverside, was the lead author in the study that was published in the journal Vaccine.
From the layman’s point of view, it would seem that the alcohol attenuates the pathogens in the vaccine for the moderate drinkers but excessive alcohol starts to weaken the immune response.
